Bayerische Motoren Worken AG or Bavarian Motor Works is the
manufacturer of the popular brand of cars and motorcycles BMW. Perhaps
“manufacturer” does not do it justice. Bimmers are works of art, and
it would be better to say they were crafted rather than built. Ask any
BMW owner and they will honestly tell you that their car is a beauty to
look at and to drive.
BMWs may be termed luxury cars, but that does not mean that they are limited to only driving around the rich. These perfectly-tuned precision machines are capable of performance to the highest degree, with excellent acceleration and smooth handling. They can also rip it up with their powerful engines. No wonder that a certain class of street racer has taken to BMW cars.
BMW Headlights – Form, Function, Reliability
BMW Headlights allow you to see where you are going in darkness and bad weather. Moreover, they can warn oncoming traffic about your presence. Driving without headlights or with broken headlights is simply asking for trouble.
BMW sculpts its cars’ grilles such that the BMW angel eyes headlights themselves are works of art. Finding replacement headlights is not particularly difficult, and even the standard replacements work well. However, if you really want to improve driving performance, then you will want to upgrade your headlights to something better than the standard.
Choosing Headlights – Differences, Criteria, Points Worth Looking Out For
First off, when we talk about headlights in general, you know that there are different socket types or connections not only between manufacturers but even between car models. However, your BMW will only use one kind of socket, so you don’t really choose socket types – rather you ensure that the headlight connection fits the base, or else you’ll end up wasting money.
Next, different car models use different headlights. This is simply a result of the designs that car manufacturers (and artisans) put on their vehicles. You can’t expect to replace a round headlight with something square or almond-shaped, right?
One of the most obvious criteria for BMW headlights is their brightness, but that is difficult to differentiate when the differences are minute. What you will want to look out for is how many lumens a headlight produces. The higher the lumen count, the brighter it is – or more correctly, the farther away the light can be seen.
Luminosity is just one part of the equation. For BMW headlights, you want to be able to see straight ahead or the road before you. That means you will need good focusing lenses for both high and low beams. These lenses condense and direct light, so that you get more illumination where you need it. A bright headlight with bad lenses looks dimmer and can cause a whitewash effect that reduces visibility and can confuse oncoming drivers as to your precise location.
Halogen, High Intensity Discharge. BMW Xenon Headlights
Different technologies bring a variety of options to the table. We start off with halogen lights. These lights are quite bright, but they tend to consume more energy than other types of lights. That’s because halogen lights produce a lot of heat, which is technically wasted energy. Most cars come with halogen lights. Upgrading from BMW halo headlights to other types of headlights will decrease overall power consumption, or increase brightness for the same amount of power.
High Intensity Discharge lamps, unlike halogen lamps, do not use filaments to produce light. Instead, these use short arcs of electricity between two electrodes, exciting the molecules of the surrounding gases sealed inside the lamp. The result is a greater level of illumination per unit of energy, with less heat produced. There are several types of HID lamps, and they differ mostly in the gases used inside the lamps. These are often seen on high-end vehicles.
Xenon lamps are a type of HID lamp, and they might just be the most popular kind of HID lamp for headlights. Xenon lights use xenon gas, which allows the lamp to achieve maximum brightness in a shorter amount of time (other types of HID take longer to “warm up”). The result is a characteristic bluish-white light, unlike the yellowish light of halogen lamps.
What About LED (Light-Emitting Diode) Headlights?
The development of LED headlights has been very active since 2004, but they aren’t quite ready for street driving as yet. They actually produce a significant amount of heat, but not on the end with the light – rather, it is their bases that get hot. While these problems are being solved, LEDs are not popular as headlights. However, they do make for great accent lights that can help you define your own style.
The power advantages of LEDs are great, and could potentially lower your headlights’ power consumption greatly. For now though, we can’t quite put these on our cars.
Replacement Is a Must, But Upgrading Is Also Great
Most people buy new BMW headlights only to replace their old ones and they will tend to choose the ones that most closely match their old lights. Replacing broken lights should be done immediately. No one in their right mind wants to get in trouble with the fuzz. Driving without BMW projector headlights (whether broken or turned off) is an offence. If it’s just burned out and not broken, you might get away with it during the day, but the night is a different story. If you don’t want to pay fines, shell out money for an extra pair of lights that you can use as replacements and stow away the spares in the trunk.
Of course, why should you go for the same old thing when you can go the extra mile and get an upgraded version? Upgrading your headlights has all sorts of advantages, not the least of which is a more customized look. Getting upgraded BMW headlights is essential to any car driver who wants to stand out – as if driving a beautiful Bimmer was not enough!
