Different technologies bring a variety of options to the table. We start off with halogen lights. These lights are quite bright, but they tend to consume more energy than other types of lights. That’s because halogen lights produce a lot of heat, which is technically wasted energy. Most cars come with halogen lights. Upgrading from BMW halo headlights to other types of headlights will decrease overall power consumption, or increase brightness for the same amount of power.
High Intensity Discharge lamps, unlike halogen lamps, do not use filaments to produce light. Instead, these use short arcs of electricity between two electrodes, exciting the molecules of the surrounding gases sealed inside the lamp. The result is a greater level of illumination per unit of energy, with less heat produced. There are several types of HID lamps, and they differ mostly in the gases used inside the lamps. These are often seen on high-end vehicles.Xenon lamps are a type of HID lamp, and they might just be the most popular kind of HID lamp for headlights. Xenon lights use xenon gas, which allows the lamp to achieve maximum brightness in a shorter amount of time (other types of HID take longer to “warm up”). The result is a characteristic bluish-white light, unlike the yellowish light of halogen lamps.
What Are LED (Light-Emitting Diode) Headlights?
The development of LED headlights has been very active since 2004, but they aren’t quite ready for street driving as yet. They actually produce a significant amount of heat, but not on the end with the light – rather, it is their bases that get hot. While these problems are being solved, LEDs are not popular as headlights. However, they do make for great accent lights that can help you define your own style.The power advantages of LEDs are great, and could potentially lower your headlights’ power consumption greatly. For now though, we can’t quite put these on our cars.
